Ahrefs

The Verdict

I've used both for real client work and the honest answer is they've converged. Five years ago this was a clear either/or. Now it's about which half of your workflow matters more.

Choose Semrush if

You want one platform for SEO plus PPC, social, and content. Semrush bundles the whole marketing stack, and if you'd actually use the non-SEO tools, it's the better value for the money.

Choose Ahrefs if

Backlinks are your whole job. Ahrefs' link index is fresher and deeper, Site Explorer is faster to read, and the interface doesn't bury you in menus. It's the cleaner tool for pure SEO.
