James Merrick

Editor & Founder

I’ve spent 12 years in digital marketing, most of it burning money on tools that promised the world and delivered a settings screen. TheToolist is my attempt to stop anyone else making the same mistakes. Every tool on here has been signed up for, logged into, and used by me — with my own card, on real projects, in the same way you’d use them. I don’t take demo calls, I don’t read press kits, and I couldn’t care less whether you’ve got an affiliate programme. If it’s good, I’ll tell you. If it’s not, I’ll tell you louder.

How We Test

Hands-on testing

We sign up for every tool ourselves. No vendor demos, no press kits, no "review copies." We use real accounts, real data, and real workflows — exactly as you would.

Consistent scoring

Every tool is rated on four dimensions: Features (40%), Ease of Use (25%), Value for Money (25%), and Support (10%). Same framework, applied the same way, every time.

Real-world scenarios

We don't just click around the dashboard. We run actual SEO audits, build real email campaigns, deploy live websites — the same tasks you'd use these tools for in production.

Periodic re-testing

Tools change fast. We re-review major tools at least every 6 months, and update ratings and content whenever a significant feature change, pricing shift, or acquisition happens.

How We Rate

40%

Features

Depth, breadth, and quality of the feature set vs. competitors at similar price points.

25%

Ease of Use

Onboarding speed, interface clarity, documentation quality, and overall user experience.

25%

Value

Price vs. what you get. We compare cost-per-feature against alternatives in the same tier.

10%

Support

Response time, knowledge base quality, community resources, and availability of live support.

Full Disclosure

We earn money through affiliate commissions. When you click a "Visit" or "Try" link and sign up for a tool, we may receive a commission — at zero extra cost to you. This is how we keep TheToolist free to use, ad-free, and independent.

Commissions never influence our ratings. Our scoring framework is applied identically to every tool, regardless of whether they have an affiliate program. We regularly recommend tools that pay us nothing — and we have turned down affiliate partnerships with tools that scored poorly in our testing.

We don't accept sponsored placements. Tools cannot pay to appear higher in our rankings, get a better review, or be featured as a "top pick." Every recommendation on this site is earned through testing, not bought.

Some links are not affiliate links. For tools without affiliate programs — or tools we choose not to partner with — we link directly with no tracking. Our recommendation stands on its own.

Got a tool we should review?

We're always looking for the next great tool. If there's a SaaS tool you think deserves a thorough, honest review, let us know and we'll add it to the queue.
